Malcolm on the Opa bed

Grandchildren. A grandson. Malcolm. There is nothing like it. My mindshare for the past couple of weeks has been occupied by Malcolm. I live on the east coast, he lives in the midwest so we don't get together very often but what a treat when we do. For the first two days of the visit I couldn't get close to him. On the third day we played together on the floor, I sat him on my chest, I laid him down on my chest, he fell asleep. Best of friends from then on.

In the beginning.

Getting started. Well, I guess that it's inevitable. I have been hacking with computers since 1963. In college I got my first tast of it on a Royal RPC-4000 but quickly moved on to the IBM 1620, 7040, and 1401, as well as a Digital PDP-5. I had a brief fling with TCP/IP in 1982 at Perkin-Elmer. And I was one of the early adopters of WEB technology at AT&T in the 1994-1995 time frame. So here in 2005 it's about time that I get off my butt and start a blog.

As I start writing this two questions come to mind.

First - Who cares? Why on earth would anyone want to read my ramblings about what's on my mind, what I'm doing, what's consuming my mindshare. Well my mother might, but at 93 pc's and the web have been quite a challenge for her. On the flip side of the age axis my kids also might, with the emphasis on might. So there's possible audience of four. My wife might - that's five. Throw in a few friends and relatives and we might get to ten.

But there's more. The web is a big place. Perhaps, just perhaps, there is another kindred soul out there with whom my thoughts strike a resonant chord. Perhaps we'll find each other by a search, perhaps through a friend-of-a-friend, maybe someone will even link to me. And perhaps that person will find a grain of support in knowning that at least one other person shares a common value, a common interest. And perhaps that knowledge of company will give that person the confidence to shout out that value, to develop that interest.

Second -will this be the first and the last post? When I get started on a new project I find it hard to see much beyond the beginning. I can remember my first day on a new job many years ago. Driving to work that morning I could see it lasting for a few months or so, but never the sixteen years that it turned out to be. This is much the same. Will I write something every day, once a week, aperiodically, or will this be it. We'll see.
